Appointment of a Special Negotiator for Ukraine

European governments are stepping up efforts to appoint a special negotiator to represent their interests in negotiations regarding Ukraine. This decision is driven by concerns that the United States may reach a peace agreement with Russia without the involvement of the European Union. European leaders first discussed the idea of appointing a special envoy at the EU summit in March 2022, but no decision has yet been made regarding the appointment of a representative.

Potential Candidates for the Special Envoy Position

Italian government minister Giovanni Battista Fazzolari expressed the opinion that the position of special envoy should be offered to former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Additionally, Finnish President Alexander Stubb is also being considered as a potential representative of Europe in negotiations with Washington and Moscow. The question of who will represent Europe in these important negotiations remains relevant.

Next week, a meeting involving Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and leaders of the G7 countries is scheduled at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The negotiations will take place on January 21 with the participation of the heads of Italy, Germany, France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

European officials emphasize that some issues cannot be discussed exclusively with the US, as they have direct implications for the security of European countries. As one official noted,

'the message to Washington is just as important as the message to Moscow.'

Thus, the situation surrounding the negotiations regarding Ukraine remains tense, and European countries are striving to ensure their involvement in the process to avoid potential agreements that could be made without their participation. The appointment of a special envoy could be an important step in strengthening Europe's position in international negotiations and ensuring its interests in the context of security on the continent. In conditions where global geopolitical interests are changing, European states are trying to maintain their role in resolving a conflict that directly impacts their stability and security.
