European Parliament Backs Major Financial Support for Ukraine
The European Parliament has given its formal approval to a substantial €90 billion financial assistance package for Ukraine, covering the period from 2026 to 2027. This crucial vote represents a significant political commitment from the EU's legislative body. The funds are designated for macro-financial assistance, budgetary support, and strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities. The next required step is for the Council of the European Union to formally adopt the decision.
Allocation of the Funds
Specifically, €30 billion from the EU's Ukraine Facility will be allocated for macro-financial aid and direct support to the state budget. The remaining €60 billion is earmarked for bolstering Ukraine's defense capacity and the procurement of military equipment. The first tranche of this new funding could be disbursed as early as the beginning of the second quarter of 2026. Since February 2022, total EU assistance to Ukraine has reached €70.7 billion, solidifying the bloc's position as the largest financial donor to the country. This sustained support is vital for Ukraine's resilience against ongoing aggression.
This parliamentary endorsement is a critical milestone in supporting Ukraine amidst the protracted war and severe economic challenges. Strengthening the nation's defense and stabilizing its budget are fundamental to ensuring its stability and future recovery. The anticipated final approval by the EU Council is expected to reinforce confidence in the European Union's and its member states' continued, long-term backing of Ukraine.
