European Parliament Calls for Stronger Measures
In a bid to close loopholes in the sanctions regime against Russia, the European Parliament is urging EU member states to take more decisive action against the so-called 'shadow fleet' of Russian vessels. During an interview with Sky News, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola argued for the confiscation of a greater number of ships belonging to this clandestine network, which is used to circumvent restrictions.
Metsola acknowledged that while the EU has made progress in implementing sanctions, more must be done to effectively counter Russian aggression. She emphasized:
'We still need to do more on the shadow fleet, more vessels need to be confiscated.'
— Roberta Metsola
She added: 'I think we are doing well, but we need to do better.' This push comes as Western nations seek to tighten economic pressure on Moscow, which has increasingly relied on obscure maritime practices to export its oil and other commodities.
Support for Ukraine and the Need for Collective Action
This call for action coincides with a statement from the G7 nations on the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, reaffirming their unwavering support for Ukraine. Metsola stressed the critical importance of preventing Russia from continuing to fund its war against Ukraine and Europe with any funds that could originate, directly or indirectly, from the European Union. She stated:
'For us, any possibility that Russia continues to wage war against Ukraine and against Europe as a whole, using funds that could inadvertently or explicitly come from the European Union, is unacceptable.'
— Roberta Metsola
Metsola's appeal for robust measures against Russia's shadow fleet underscores the necessity for unified EU efforts to combat sanctions evasion. Effective cooperation among EU states and their allies is now seen as crucial for regional stability and upholding international law, as the threat from Russia persists.
