The European Union is preparing for a complete rejection of Russian gas and oil by 2028 to ensure energy independence from Russia. Member states' governments plan to support this initiative during a vote that will take place at the end of October.
The reached agreement signifies overcoming the first political obstacle on the way to adopting key legislation. The final vote of the member states' governments is scheduled for the end of October - on the 20th, ministers will gather for the final approval of the document.
The plan entails a phased rejection of all types of Russian energy resources over three years. This aims to deprive the Kremlin of financial flows that support the war against Ukraine. The only opponents of the initiative remain Hungary and Slovakia, but their opposition will not be able to block the decision.
New sanctions against Russia
At the same time, the European Union is preparing even stricter restrictions for Russia. A ban on the import of liquefied natural gas is planned for a year earlier, starting in 2027, as well as the inclusion of more than 100 vessels of Russia's 'shadow fleet' in the EU sanctions list.
The implementation of the EU's plans for a complete rejection of Russian gas and oil by 2028 and subsequent sanctions against Russia may have significant importance for ensuring energy security and political stability in this region.
