The Dispute Between Mykhailo Fedorov and Oleksandr Syrskyi
For the first time in public, former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has laid out the reasons behind his falling-out with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Speaking at a press conference reviewing his tenure, Fedorov stated that the President decided against extending their collaboration. He accepted that decision once it became clear that the top military commander would not be replaced.
According to Fedorov, initiatives from the Defense Ministry began facing obstacles at the General Staff level. He described the rift as stemming from fundamentally different approaches to warfare—especially concerning drone deployment. While denying that he ever issued an ultimatum of 'either me or Syrskyi,' Fedorov claimed that Syrskyi did present such a demand, confirming the deep tension between them.
Technology and Cooperation
Fedorov also shared his thoughts on working alongside Syrskyi moving forward:
“That means I will learn to work with him, because after all, our client is the Ukrainian people.” — Mykhailo Fedorov
He noted that Syrskyi is reluctant to engage in open discussions about problems, preferring to avoid face-to-face meetings. 'Syrskyi is not ready to speak openly about issues directly to your face,' Fedorov added. Emphasizing the need to keep pace with technological change, he remarked:
“Drones completely change their architecture—new features appear at least four times a year. We cannot keep riding on what worked back then.” — Mykhailo Fedorov
This situation highlights the critical need for collaboration across different branches of military leadership in modern warfare, where technology—especially drones—plays an ever-growing role. Disputes among top commanders can hinder effective management and the rollout of new strategies, which are vital for success on the battlefield. Resolving such disagreements will be key to Ukraine’s ongoing fight for national security.
The ongoing challenges within the Ukrainian military leadership are not just limited to personal disputes, as former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov also revealed significant issues related to corruption schemes and financial mismanagement during his tenure. These revelations emphasize the complexity of the situation and the urgent need for reforms within the Ministry of Defense to ensure effective governance and resource allocation.
