Ukrainian Basketball Players Face Lifetime Suspension
FIBA has handed down lifetime bans to Ukrainian basketball players Oleksandr Kolchenko and Serhii Pryimak for manipulating game outcomes, engaging in betting activities, and failing to report corruption. The sanctions were issued by FIBA's Disciplinary Commission, which found the athletes guilty of these offenses. Their involvement was linked to match-fixing in games involving the Naic Aces (Philippines) and Adroit (Singapore) clubs during the 2024 and 2024–2025 seasons. Specifically, the manipulations affected two Champions League East Asia matches held in May 2025.
Penalties and Repercussions
The penalties imposed on the players include a lifetime prohibition from participating in any FIBA-sanctioned events as players, as well as a permanent ban from holding any roles in FIBA activities. These restrictions extend to all competitions in Ukraine, including amateur leagues.
Against this backdrop, the Ukrainian national basketball team suffered a defeat against Spain in the fourth round of World Cup qualifying. The game ended with a score of 78:64 in Spain's favor, with the Ukrainian side failing to perform at the expected level. In the third qualifying match, Spain also beat Ukraine 66:86. However, in the second qualifying round, Ukraine secured a victory over Denmark with a score of 88:71, and in the first qualifier, they defeated Georgia, scoring 92 points to 79.

In the Georgia vs. Ukraine match, Oleksandr Kovliar was the top scorer, netting 31 points over 37 minutes of play. Other players, such as Oleksandr Lypovyi and Viacheslav Bobrov, also contributed to the victory, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively. Bobrov additionally achieved a double-double with 15 rebounds.
The disqualification of Kolchenko and Pryimak carries serious consequences for both their careers and the overall reputation of Ukrainian basketball.
