2026 FIFA World Cup

FIFA has unveiled the roster of match officials for the 2026 World Cup, a groundbreaking edition that will be the first to feature 48 national teams and be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The final selection includes 52 main referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials, representing 50 national football associations. The officials will be based in the United States, where a ten-day preparatory seminar will commence on May 31st.

Video Assistant Referees (VARs) will relocate to Dallas, the site of the International Broadcast Centre's headquarters. The 2026 tournament marks a significant expansion in the competition's format. Matches will be played across 16 cities, with the opening game scheduled for June 11th in Mexico City, featuring Mexico and South Africa. The final will be held on July 19th in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA.

Participating Teams and Tournament Format

A total of 104 matches are planned, with 72 of them taking place during the group stage across twelve groups. UEFA has qualified 16 national teams, while:

  • Africa will be represented by 10 teams,
  • Asia — 9,
  • South America and North America — 6 each,
  • Oceania will be represented by New Zealand.

Ukraine's national team did not qualify for the tournament, having lost their qualification play-off semi-final to Sweden with a score of 1:3.

The 2026 World Cup represents a pivotal moment in football history, as the expansion to 48 teams creates opportunities for nations previously unable to compete on this grand stage. With new officiating teams and technologies like VAR, the tournament promises to be both spectacular and more equitable. Ukraine's absence, while disappointing for its fans, underscores the intense level of global competition required to reach this pinnacle event.

As excitement builds for the upcoming tournament, fans can now explore their options for securing seats at the matches. Tickets for the 2026 World Cup are now available for resale, providing an opportunity to witness history as the competition expands to 48 teams. Don't miss out on your chance to be part of this landmark event in football.
