Finland confirms the detention of a former Wagner member

A Russian mercenary who participated in the war in Eastern Ukraine alongside the Wagner Group has been detained in Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed this information and noted that the authorities are conducting an investigation and will determine further actions regarding the detainee. The detained Russian is suspected of violating border laws.



“I received information back in June that there was an illegal border crossing and that the individual was arrested,” Orpo reported.


The detention occurred on June 17 when the mercenary illegally crossed the border in the northern part of the country. The Russian is currently under interrogation, and Finnish authorities are deciding how to act in this situation, considering all circumstances. The National Criminal Police is also looking into other possible criminal activities of the Russian within the country.



Neither Russia nor Ukraine has yet contacted Finland regarding this detained mercenary. However, the possibility of extraditing the Russian citizen to Ukraine remains important, with the entire process still requiring clarifications and decisions.
