Ukraine's Fire Point Unveils 'Flamingo' Missile: 3,000 km Range for Under $1 Million

В Україні представили ракету Фламінго, що має діапазон 3000 км та коштує менше мільйона доларів.

The Rise of Fire Point

An article in Foreign Policy details the growth of the Ukrainian defense firm Fire Point. Founded in 2022 by a trio consisting of a film producer, an IT developer, and an architect, the company initially operated with just 12 employees and produced a few hundred drones annually. It now specializes in developing and manufacturing its own missiles, including the 'Flamingo' cruise missile. As of the publication date, Fire Point employs roughly 3,700 people and produces tens of thousands of units each year. This rapid expansion highlights Ukraine's remarkable adaptation of its industrial base in response to the ongoing conflict.

Key Products and Capabilities

The company's flagship product is the 'Flamingo' cruise missile, which boasts a range of up to 3,000 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing over one ton. Its development took just nine months, with a unit cost kept below one million dollars. For comparison, the American Lockheed Martin JASSM missile costs between $1.6 and $1.9 million. Fire Point currently manufactures one 'Flamingo' per day but aims to ramp up production to seven daily by October.

Fire Point is also developing ballistic missiles, designated FP-7 and FP-9. Company owner Denis Shtilleman stated that the FP-9 will exceed speeds of 1,200 meters per second, surpassing the roughly 800 m/s velocity of the Russian 'Iskander' missile. Shtilleman has promised that by the end of summer, their missiles will be capable of reaching the Russian capital. In a demonstration of its reach, a 'Flamingo' missile struck the Votkinsk military production complex in February of this year, a target located over a thousand kilometers from Moscow.

The company's journey has not been without challenges. Co-owner Denis Shtilleman, who previously held Russian citizenship, acknowledged potential interceptions but remained confident, stating,

'They might intercept some—but at least twenty-five percent will definitely get through and hit the target.'
A key aspect of their production involves innovative sourcing of technology.
'We found the technology on YouTube. Not completely, of course—we had to conduct experiments; we have staff chemists. But the formula itself is widely known: ammonium perchlorate, butadiene rubber, spherical aluminum, and a few other components. It's not much more complicated than mixing concrete,'
explained Irina Terekh.

In summary, Fire Point exemplifies significant progress within Ukraine's military-industrial sector, directly addressing the urgent needs of its armed forces. The development of new technologies and the scaling of production are critical for national defense in a protracted war, potentially altering the regional military balance through increased domestic manufacturing of advanced weaponry.

The rapid advancements of Fire Point have not gone unnoticed, especially in the context of regulatory scrutiny. Recently, the Ukrainian Antitrust Authority intervened to prevent a UAE firm from acquiring a stake in the missile manufacturer, raising questions about the implications for foreign investments in Ukraine's defense sector.
