Russian Tax Authorities Freeze Accounts of Hockey Club Salavat Yulaev Over 87-Million-Ruble Debt

Фінансові труднощі хокейного клубу Салават Юлаєв призвели до замороження рахунків у російських податкових органах через значний борг.

Hockey Club Salavat Yulaev's Accounts Frozen

The Russian Federal Tax Service has frozen the bank accounts of the Salavat Yulaev hockey club due to outstanding tax debts. The action, taken last week, resulted in the blocking of five of the club's accounts. The club's debt to the tax authorities is reported to be 87 million rubles, which is approximately 1.1 million US dollars. This is not the first time the club's finances have been targeted; its accounts were also frozen in February 2026 over a debt of 84 million rubles. Such financial penalties are a recurring challenge for sports organizations operating within Russia's economic system.

Club History and the Ilteriakova Situation

Salavat Yulaev is a Russian hockey club based in Ufa that competes in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Throughout its history, the club has won the Russian championship twice (in the 2007/08 and 2010/11 seasons) and also captured the Gagarin Cup in 2010/2011. The club's honors include:

  • The Opening Cup (2008/2009, 2011/2012)
  • The Continental Cup (2009/2010)

Salavat Yulaev is one of only four KHL clubs to have qualified for the playoffs in every season of the league's existence. It has also reached the Eastern Conference finals of the Gagarin Cup six times: in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2025.

Separately, the online activity of gymnast Ilteriakova has sparked discussion on social media. On Instagram, she has liked posts featuring Vladimir Putin and Russian military personnel. Ilteriakova also follows the account of Nikita Nagornyy, who is under sanctions from Ukraine, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Furthermore, the gymnast follows the account of Russian propagandist Shaman, who is also sanctioned by Canada, the EU, and Ukraine, and has liked his posts. Another of her subscriptions is to a fan page for Alina Kabaeva, who is likewise under sanctions from Canada, the UK, the EU, the US, and Ukraine.

The freezing of Salavat Yulaev's accounts highlights the financial pressures facing professional sports teams in Russia, which can hinder their operations and player recruitment. Concurrently, the scrutiny of Ilteriakova's social media affiliations reflects the heightened focus on the political associations of athletes, which can significantly impact their public standing in the current geopolitical climate.

The ongoing financial struggles of sports clubs in Russia are not limited to hockey; similar controversies have emerged in other sports. Recently, the actions of gymnast Ilteriakova during a World Cup event have drawn significant attention, particularly regarding her behavior during the Ukrainian national anthem.
