France Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker, Arrests Captain in Marseille

Французські власті затримали танкер, пов'язаний із тіньовим флотом Росії, у Марселі та затримали його капітан.

Seizure of the 'Grinch' Tanker in Marseille

French authorities in Marseille have seized the 'Grinch' tanker, part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet,' and placed its captain under arrest. The vessel was intercepted by the French navy in the Mediterranean Sea on January 22. The 58-year-old Indian national commanding the ship was detained for the maritime violation of 'failure to fly a flag.'

The Marseille prosecutor's office now holds the 'Grinch' and intends to question its all-Indian crew about the ship's activities and route. This tanker has been involved in exporting Russian oil and petroleum products from ports in the Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific regions, primarily to China, India, and other third countries. The vessel itself is under sanctions from the United States, Ukraine, the European Union, and other nations.

Significance and International Cooperation

This incident highlights a broader security concern, as Russian intelligence services are known to use shadow fleet vessels for espionage in European waters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged European nations to take more decisive action in halting Russian oil tankers used to circumvent international sanctions.

The detention of the 'Grinch' underscores the critical need for international cooperation in maritime oversight, given the growing threat posed by the shadow fleet. This case may serve as a precedent, encouraging other nations to intensify efforts against Russian oil shipments that violate international norms. The shadow fleet is a key tool for Moscow to fund its war effort while avoiding price caps and other restrictions.
