French Farmers Protest for the Second Time: Why They Oppose the EU-MERCOSUR Agreement

Фермери Франції знову вийшли на вулиці: їхня боротьба проти угоди з МЕРКОР в ЄС.

Protests of French Farmers Against the MERCOSUR Agreement

French farmers are protesting against the EU-MERCOSUR agreement, which opens the market for cheap agricultural products from South America. Protests have been ongoing for several months, and farmers are concerned about unequal competition conditions. They believe that such an agreement could negatively affect local producers who cannot compete with low-priced imports.

The farmers are protesting for the second time this week, demonstrating their dissatisfaction. The agreement provides simplified access for agricultural products from South America to the European market, which raises concerns among farmers. The FNSEA organization, one of the largest agricultural organizations in France, actively supports these protest actions.

Blockades and New Protests

On January 12, farmers set up blockades at the port of Le Havre, marking an important stage in their campaign. About a hundred protesters were checking trucks entering the container terminal, trying to prevent the delivery of imported goods. Approximately 350 tractors participated in the demonstration, highlighting the scale of these actions.

On January 9, ambassadors of EU member states gave the 'green light' to sign the MERCOSUR agreement, which sparked new protests. Negotiations for this agreement lasted over 25 years, and now farmers are expressing their concerns about the implications it may have for their activities.

The protests of French farmers reflect a broader concern in Europe regarding globalization and its impact on local production. The MERCOSUR agreement, which involves reducing import tariffs, could create difficulties for European farmers who are already facing numerous challenges, including climate change and rising production costs. The situation surrounding the agreement may lead to intensified debates on protecting the local agricultural sector in the context of global trade.
