French Navy Diverts 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker Bound from Murmansk

Французський військовий флот перенаправив танкер з тіньового флоту, що прямував з Мурманська.

Oil Tanker Grinch Diverted by French Forces

French naval forces have diverted the oil tanker Grinch to the port of Marseille-Fos for a legal investigation. The vessel was intercepted in the western Mediterranean Sea after it departed from the Russian port of Murmansk in early January. Suspected of being part of Russia's 'shadow fleet,' the tanker was sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands.

Escort and Sanctions Enforcement

Military personnel escorted the tanker to Marseille-Fos for inspection as part of a maritime law investigation. The interdiction and escort operation was supported by the naval forces of other nations, including the United Kingdom. The Grinch is subject to sanctions imposed by the United States, Ukraine, the European Union, and other countries, indicating its alleged role in smuggling Russian oil. These actions are part of a broader international effort to enforce sanctions and disrupt Russia's ability to finance its war effort.

According to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, the tanker Grinch is involved in exporting Russian oil and petroleum products from Russian ports in the Baltic and Black Seas, as well as from the Pacific region. Its primary export destinations are:

  • China
  • India
  • Other third countries
Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked French leader Emmanuel Macron for actions aimed at combating shadow schemes for supplying Russian energy resources.

This incident highlights the ongoing international efforts to counter the smuggling of Russian energy resources, particularly under the sanctions regime imposed due to Russia's war in Ukraine. The involvement of multiple nations' naval forces underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for coordinated action to uphold maritime law. The support from world leaders for such measures is seen as crucial for maintaining economic pressure on Russia.
