Ilya Traber Taken into Custody

A 75-year-old St. Petersburg businessman, Ilya Traber, has been ordered held for two months by Moscow’s Basmanny District Court. Officers from the FSB’s central headquarters detained him on suspicion of orchestrating a contract killing targeting entrepreneur and municipal deputy Alexander Petrov. Petrov was fatally shot by a sniper near his cottage in the Leningrad region in October 2020. Investigators believe the murder may have stemmed from business disputes.

Spanish prosecutors have previously described Ilya Traber as a leading figure in the Tambov organized crime group. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed that Traber is acquainted with President Vladimir Putin, having been among the honored guests at Putin’s birthday celebrations in 2004 and 2016. The court has also ordered the arrest of another suspect in the case, Alisultan Nadyrbegov. As part of the investigation, law enforcement carried out searches at the premises of businessman Gennady Petrov, whom media outlets have identified as a leader of the Tambov-Malyshev criminal network.

Implications for Russia’s Image

The arrest of Ilya Traber took place on June 17, when FSB agents conducted an operation that drew significant media attention. The case is being investigated within the broader context of serious crimes linked to organized crime in Russia.

This detention is part of a wider campaign by Russian law enforcement to crack down on organized crime, which has deep roots in the country’s business environment. Given Traber’s connections to high-ranking officials, both domestic and international observers will closely follow the case, as it could affect Russia’s reputation regarding the rule of law and crime-fighting efforts. Further investigations may uncover additional details about the ties between business and the criminal underworld in Russia.
