Putin proposed China as a guarantor of Ukraine's security: what does it mean

Russian President Putin has shown readiness to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine during a meeting with U.S. President Trump. He also suggested considering China among possible guarantors, which has raised some concerns among experts.



According to Axios, the Kremlin's position may indicate an attempt by Russia to prevent any security mechanisms that involve NATO troops. Mentioning China as a guarantor may suggest Putin's attempt to shift the focus away from Western initiatives and draw attention to alternative security guarantee models, which could affect NATO's support for Ukraine.



It was previously known that Trump and European allies discussed security guarantees for Ukraine based on the principles of NATO Article 5, which provides for collective defense in the event of an attack.


The Russian leader expressed readiness to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine during a meeting with Trump and proposed considering China as a potential guarantor. This has raised certain concerns in expert circles, as such a move may affect Ukraine's position in relations with NATO and other international partners.
