Gazprom Neft Discovers Largest Oil Field in 30 Years on Yamal Peninsula

Нове відкриття на Ямалі: найбільше нафтове родовище за три десятиліття

Major New Oil Discovery on Russia's Yamal Peninsula

Gazprom Neft has announced the discovery of the largest oil field found in Russia in three decades, located on the Yamal Peninsula. The field, situated within the South-Novoport and Saletinskaya license areas, holds an estimated 400 million barrels of geological oil reserves. This find is a significant development for Russia's energy sector, which remains one of the world's top producers despite facing substantial international sanctions.

Gazprom Neft, Russia's third-largest oil producer, increased its own output by 5% in 2024, reaching approximately 127 million tons of oil equivalent. However, Russia's overall production of oil and gas condensate declined by 0.8% to 512 million tons. The country's total proven oil reserves stand at 31 billion tons, with 13 billion tons considered economically viable for extraction.

Economic Headwinds for Russia's Energy Sector

According to Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources, the nation's explored oil reserves are sufficient for another 26 years. Yet, Russia's revenue from oil and gas exports has recently fallen to its lowest level since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The European Union is considering a complete blockade of tankers exporting Russian oil, and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries could inflict losses exceeding 1 trillion rubles (about $12.9 billion) by the end of 2025.

The Yamal discovery could help offset declining export revenues as Russia attempts to counter financial losses from sanctions and reduced demand. However, the sector's future development faces severe challenges. Potential blockades and the growing risk of infrastructure damage may significantly limit the impact of new discoveries like this one, underscoring the complex pressures on Russia's strategic energy industry.
