Gheorghe Hagi Appointed as Head Coach of Romania's National Team

Gheorghe Hagi is set to become the new head coach of the Romanian national team, succeeding Mirel Lucescu. The official presentation of the new manager will take place after the Easter holiday. Hagi's contract will run for a period of four years. His first match in charge is scheduled for June 1, when Romania will face the national team of Georgia.

The coaching change became necessary after the 80-year-old Mirel Lucescu lost consciousness at the national team camp and was hospitalized. Doctors decided to fit Lucescu with a defibrillator, indicating the seriousness of his condition. Hagi, who has yet to sign his contract with the Romanian Football Federation, brings significant experience to the role from his distinguished career both on the pitch and in the dugout.

The Career of Gheorghe Hagi

Gheorghe Hagi, a native of Constanța County, began his professional career in the 1982/83 season. He played for several prominent clubs, including:

  • Sportul Studențesc
  • Steaua București
  • Real Madrid
  • Brescia
  • Barcelona
  • Galatasaray

While with Steaua, Hagi won the Romanian league title three times, along with two Romanian Cups and a Supercup, and also secured a UEFA Super Cup. Following his retirement as a player, he managed clubs such as Bursaspor, Galatasaray, Politehnica Timișoara, Steaua, Viitorul, and Farul Constanța, winning numerous trophies.

In the new UEFA Nations League season, which begins in autumn 2024, Romania has been drawn in League B, Group 4. Their opponents will be Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Sweden. Romania's first Nations League match is scheduled for September 25, 2024, away against Sweden.

The appointment of Gheorghe Hagi marks a new chapter for the Romanian national team as it seeks to rebuild its standing in international football. Known as "The Maradona of the Carpathians," Hagi is a legendary figure whose success as both a player and a manager could galvanize the squad. This move provides crucial stability and a fresh direction for the team following the sudden health crisis of the previous coach.

As Romania prepares for a new era under Gheorghe Hagi's leadership, the recent health issues surrounding former coach Mirel Lucescu highlight the need for change. This transition comes on the heels of Lucescu's hospitalization, which raises questions about his future involvement with the team.
