Ukrainian Hero Details 42-Day Ordeal: Survival Without Water on the Sumy Front

Витримавши 42 дні без води, герой України розповідає про своє неймовірне виживання на фронті в Сумщині.

The Harsh Reality for Ukrainian Soldiers on the Front Line

Lyubomyr Mikalo, a Hero of Ukraine serving with the 103rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, has described the brutal conditions his unit faced during a deployment in the Sumy region in the summer of 2025. His group endured a continuous 42-day rotation without relief, suffering from severe shortages of water and food. Water was delivered by drone, but these critical supply drops occurred only once every few days. From a single delivery, the soldiers could collect up to two liters of water to share.

Under these extreme constraints, the defenders managed to brew just one cup of instant 'three-in-one' coffee for three men during the entire period, and prepared instant noodles only once. Mikalo shared details of their grim daily routine, explaining that with no water for personal hygiene, the soldiers were forced to wash and brush their teeth using wet wipes.

“In war, a wet wipe is a tool for everything. There was even a moment when we had no water, so we had to suck the moisture out of the wipes,” he stated.

Endurance and a Shifting Demographics

The atmosphere of intense heat and stress was compounded by the strict rationing of drinking water.

“The maximum was a tiny sip, just enough to wet your mouth,” emphasized Lyubomyr Mikalo.
In these conditions, the soldiers demonstrated remarkable endurance and ingenuity simply to survive. This account highlights the severe logistical challenges faced by Ukrainian forces along a vast frontline. Yaroslav Melnyk, a Hero of Ukraine and commander of a 'Buk-M1' anti-aircraft missile division, noted that the average age of men joining his unit is now over 35, with significantly fewer 20-year-olds enlisting.

The situation faced by these Ukrainian servicemen underscores the critical importance of providing adequate support for combat units, especially during prolonged missions without rotation. In a war where resources are scarce, survival becomes paramount, and the resilience and inventiveness of soldiers play a decisive role. These testimonies also point to a demographic shift within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, where older servicemen are increasingly forming the backbone, a factor that could influence future military strategy and tactics.
