Russian and Belarusian Athletes Cleared for Full Return

On May 18, the International Gymnastics Federation (World Gymnastics) eliminated every restriction previously imposed on Russia and Belarus. This decision, reached by the organization's executive committee in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, means that athletes from both nations can now compete internationally across all gymnastics disciplines. These include artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, acrobatic gymnastics, and aerobic gymnastics.

Updated Regulations and Reactions from Other Bodies

Under the new policy, competitors face no limitations and are permitted to display their national symbols. If they secure a podium finish, their flags will be raised and their anthems played during victory ceremonies. World Gymnastics had initially sanctioned Russian and Belarusian athletes following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since early 2024, however, they were allowed to participate under a neutral status and had already taken part in Olympic qualifying events for the Paris Games.

The federation justified its shift by citing the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recommendation that sports organizations remove all barriers for Belarusian athletes and teams. Consequently, World Gymnastics also decided to lift restrictions on Russian competitors. The first to return to international competition under their own flag and anthem will be Russian acrobats and aerobic gymnasts, expected in late May or early June. Trampolinists and rhythmic gymnasts from Russia are set to follow at the end of June.

It is worth noting that other international federations, including the International Tennis Federation and World Athletics, have chosen to maintain sanctions against Belarusian athletes.

This move by the International Gymnastics Federation could significantly reshape the landscape of global gymnastics competitions.

The reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national emblems may provoke mixed reactions within the sports community, particularly among nations that continue to uphold sanctions against these countries. At the same time, the evolving stance of the IOC and certain federations suggests a gradual restoration of sporting ties, despite ongoing political and social tensions. This also highlights the divergent approaches among various sports organizations regarding the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in international events.

While the International Gymnastics Federation has lifted restrictions for Russian and Belarusian athletes, other sports organizations are taking a different stance. For instance, World Athletics has decided to maintain its sanctions against Belarus, reflecting the ongoing complexities within the global sports community regarding athlete participation amidst geopolitical tensions.
