Ivan Krulko’s Commentary

In a recent interview, Ivan Krulko, the head of the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine, addressed the positions held by legendary biathletes Martin Fourcade and Ole Einar Bjørndalen regarding sanctions against Russian athletes. He observed that while the biathlon community largely supports Ukraine, differing views still exist. Krulko suggested that Bjørndalen’s perspective may be shaped by the influence of his wife, former Belarusian biathlete Darya Domracheva, as well as by propaganda that colors their understanding of the situation.

The Stance of International Sports

Krulko also referenced statements from Sebastian Samuelsson, who has voiced support for Ukraine and condemned Russian aggression. He emphasized that young Ukrainians are targeting missiles at Ukrainian buildings and noted that Russian athletes hold officer ranks in the Russian military or FSB and back President Putin’s policies.

“Russia leaves behind a scorched earth, occupation, and human suffering,” Krulko declared.

Additionally, Krulko discussed the possibility of Russian and Belarusian coaches and athletes joining Ukraine’s national team. He pointed out that ‘the biathlon community probably supports Ukraine more than any other group in world sports.’ In Krulko’s view, ‘they are trapped by their own stereotypes’—referring to Fourcade and Bjørndalen.

Krulko stated that international support for Ukraine has been made possible by the proactive efforts of the Ukrainian side.

“Without our active stance, there would be no such backing from the biathlon community,” he concluded.

Krulko’s comments highlight the complex dynamics in international sports, where athletes’ personal views can significantly influence public opinion. Despite differing positions, support for Ukraine within the biathlon community remains substantial, according to Krulko. This underscores the deep connection between political events and athletic competitions, as well as how sports can serve as a platform for expressing social and political viewpoints.

As the biathlon community navigates these complex opinions, the impact of the ongoing conflict is felt deeply, especially in Ukraine. Recent reports indicate that Russian shelling has severely damaged biathlon infrastructure in Chernihiv and Sumy regions, further complicating the situation for athletes and fans alike. This destruction underscores the broader implications of the war on sports, revealing the urgent need for solidarity and support for Ukraine.
