The head of the Ukrainian Culture Society in Hungary, Yaroslav Khortyani, called for not generalizing all Hungarians as hostile towards Ukraine due to the policies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. According to her, many Hungarians, including the mayor of Budapest, express support for Ukraine despite the growing anti-Ukrainian propaganda.
Khortyani also noted that after 2022, Hungarian society actively supported Ukrainian refugees, but an anti-Ukrainian campaign began on television, featuring political analysts who called for Ukraine to shorten its weapons and engage in peace negotiations.
Support for Ukraine from Some Hungarians
Khortyani pointed out that despite the government's attempts to discredit Ukraine, the majority of Hungarians distinguish between the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian authorities. She emphasized that the mayor of Budapest and most politically conscious Hungarians continue to support Ukraine.
Noting that Russian propagandists are trying to discredit Ukrainians in Hungary, Khortyani expressed hope for a reduction in anti-Ukrainian rhetoric after the parliamentary elections in April next year.
Hungarian society has an ambiguous attitude towards Ukraine. The head of the Ukrainian Culture Society in Hungary emphasizes that many Hungarians express support for Ukraine despite the anti-Ukrainian propaganda, and she also hopes for a change in the situation after the parliamentary elections in the country.
