The Case of Yulia Tymoshenko
In the bribery case against Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna party, the primary piece of evidence—an audio recording of a conversation with lawmaker Ihor Kopytin—shows signs of tampering. Renowned British digital forensics expert Joseph Nagdi concluded that the audio file exhibits indicators of forgery. Similar findings were reached by experts at the Kharkiv Institute of Forensic Examinations named after Bokarius, who detected traces of editing in the audio file using Adobe Audition software.
Presiding judge Oleksiy Kravchuk of the High Anti-Corruption Court stated that he does not consider the audio recording to be reliable evidence. This assessment was upheld by the Appeals Chamber of the HACC. On May 12, the Appeals Chamber rejected Tymoshenko's appeal against the suspicion notice issued to her in the case of alleged bribery of lawmakers.
Searches and Suspicions
On the evening of January 13, anti-corruption officers searched the Batkivshchyna office and seized $40,000 from Tymoshenko, which she claims were her personal savings. On January 14, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office formally notified Tymoshenko of suspicion, alleging that she attempted to bribe three lawmakers from another faction.
On January 16, the High Anti-Corruption Court imposed a preventive measure on Tymoshenko in the form of bail set at 33.3 million hryvnias. She was ordered to:
- surrender her foreign passport;
- remain within the Kyiv region unless authorized by investigators;
- refrain from communicating with certain designated lawmakers.
On January 23, the full bail amount was paid for Tymoshenko. On January 26, the court rejected her appeal to cancel the bail but allowed her to communicate with lawmakers and move freely across Ukraine.
On February 16, 2026, the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court overturned a lower court's ruling to seize part of the Tymoshenko couple's assets. On February 26, the NABU returned the funds seized during the search, following the Appeals Chamber's decision. Tymoshenko views the situation as political persecution and claims that Kopytin himself proposed cooperation, as he opposes the policies of his faction and the president.
