Comprehensive Review of General Staff Officers Underway
Ukraine’s Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, has initiated an extensive evaluation of General Staff officers, emphasizing the importance of frontline combat experience and leadership capabilities. On September 28, Drapatyi convened leaders of the General Staff’s structural units to outline the next steps in this process. By October 2, these unit heads must submit detailed reports on officers and generals who have lacked practical combat roles at the battalion, brigade, corps, or operational group level since 2022.
Additionally, officers eligible for retirement or release are required to decide on their future by the same deadline. Notably, this review does not automatically dismiss officers without recent combat exposure. Instead, some will be reassigned to active units, while their positions will be filled by officers with current battlefield experience. This directive from the new Commander-in-Chief has met resistance among certain officers.

“If we expect the troops to evolve, the change must start with ourselves.”
Another officer stressed the critical role of combat experience, stating:
“While combat experience isn’t the sole measure of professionalism, the strategic staff cannot afford to lose touch with the realities on the ground during wartime. The General Staff must serve the troops by providing decisions that enhance battlefield effectiveness.”
