A 20-Year Deal: Greece's Major US Gas Purchase and Its European Implications

Спільна енергійна ініціатива: Греція укладає важливу угоду з США на два десятиліття.

Greece's Move for Energy Security

In a significant move to bolster its energy security, Greece has initiated negotiations to purchase up to 15 billion cubic meters of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually for the next two decades. The joint venture Atlantic Sea LNG Trade, an alliance of Greek companies DEPA and Aktor, aims to finalize the agreement on February 24th in Washington. This deal could reshape Europe's energy landscape as the continent works towards completely phasing out Russian gas by the end of 2027. This long-term strategy reflects a broader European pivot towards more secure and diversified energy sources.

The Vertical Gas Corridor

Atlantic Sea LNG Trade intends to supply this American gas via the planned 'Vertical Gas Corridor.' This infrastructure will allow for the transportation of gas from Greek terminals to a network of countries, including:

  • Albania
  • North Macedonia
  • Bulgaria
  • Romania
  • Hungary
  • Moldova
  • Austria
  • Ukraine

Current data indicates the strongest consumer demand is presently in Romania, Hungary, and Moldova, where industrial consumption is rising actively, particularly in the southern part of the gas corridor.

Furthermore, Atlantic Sea LNG Trade has already signed its first contract to supply American LNG to Ukraine's 'Naftogaz,' with the initial shipment expected in March via the Revithoussa terminal. This could mark a crucial step in securing Ukraine's energy stability amid the ongoing regional energy crisis. The development of this corridor is part of a concerted effort to reduce Eastern Europe's historical energy dependencies.

As Alexandros Exarchou noted, 'If Europe does not want to become a hostage to gas blackmail again, it must conclude long-term agreements with the United States.'

This agreement not only advances Greece's energy independence but also holds the potential to shift energy policy across the wider region. With European nations actively seeking alternatives to Russian energy resources, this cooperation with the US represents a pivotal phase in strengthening Europe's energy security. Long-term gas supply contracts can help countries avoid potential future energy crises, especially given the current unstable geopolitical climate.
