Social Media Backlash to Reshetnyk's Initial Greeting

Ukrainian TV host Grygoriy Reshetnyk sparked controversy on social media after posting a greeting for International Women's Day on March 8th. His message, shared on Threads, wished for women to have a partner who could provide them with 'a generator, a full tank of gas, flowers, and gifts.' He emphasized the importance of attention, care, love, and fidelity, stating:

“Girls, happy spring holiday to you. May you have by your side a person who can provide you with a generator, a full tank, flowers, and gifts. But most importantly, with attention, care, love, and fidelity! Because each of you was born to be happy.”

The post received significant negative feedback, with users criticizing it for perpetuating the stereotype that women are dependent and incapable of providing for themselves. Many comments called for a reevaluation of who society considers thought leaders. One user wrote:

“Yet more proof that it's time to reconsider who we view as thought leaders. Grisha, this day is about equality, so it would have been nice to wish for women to be able to provide everything for themselves and face no obstacles in doing so.”

Reshetnyk's Response and Academic Work

In response to the criticism, Reshetnyk published a new post. This time, he greeted those for whom March 8th is not a celebration, marking the International Day of Women's Rights and Peace. He wrote: 'To everyone for whom this is not a holiday - I congratulate you on the International Day of Struggle for Women's Rights! Be strong, equal, unbreakable, independent!'.

Separately from this incident, Grygoriy Reshetnyk recently defended his doctoral dissertation at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts. His research focuses on the reality show 'The Bachelor' as a cultural phenomenon and its influence on perceptions of love and romantic relationships in Ukraine. The dissertation is 217 pages long, highlighting his activity beyond media in the academic sphere.

This episode underscores the need for sensitivity regarding social issues in public statements, especially around international observances related to women's rights. The public reaction to Reshetnyk's words reflects a growing societal awareness and desire for progress on gender equality. Public figures must recognize the impact their words have on shaping public perceptions and stereotypes. In Ukraine, discussions around gender roles have gained prominence alongside broader social changes.
