BMW Concludes Figure 02 Humanoid Robot Trials at US Plant
BMW has concluded a major trial of Figure 02 humanoid robots at one of its US manufacturing plants. For nearly 10 months, these robots worked on an active body shop assembly line alongside human employees, performing tasks that demand millimeter precision and significant physical endurance. During this intensive operational period, the robots assisted in assembling over 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. This trial represents a significant step in the automotive industry's exploration of advanced automation.
The company noted that 'the robots were tasked with placing sheet metal parts into welding fixtures. This work requires millimeter precision and considerable physical stamina, which often leads to fatigue and errors among human workers.'
The robots' work schedule consisted of 10-hour daily shifts, operating five days a week with two days off.
Next Phase: Testing Shifts to German Facility
Following the successful US trial, BMW plans to move the next phase of testing for the Figure 02 humanoids to its plant in Leipzig, Germany. In this pilot project, the robots will be used for assembling high-voltage batteries and assisting in the production of other components. This shift to a key European facility underscores the global scope of BMW's automation strategy.
Capabilities and Future Potential of Robotics
The Figure 02 robots, standing 1.65 meters tall and weighing 60 kilograms, possess the ability to learn while performing tasks and update their programming. This opens new prospects for the application of artificial intelligence in industrial settings.
