GUR's Preparations for the Invasion
Under the leadership of Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine's Defence Intelligence Agency (GUR) was already executing preparatory measures for a full-scale Russian invasion well before February 24, 2022. The Russian plan for a swift capture of Kyiv via the Hostomel airport was ultimately derailed by Ukrainian resistance. This early preparation highlights the critical role of intelligence in modern warfare, where anticipating an adversary's moves can determine a nation's survival.
In late 2021 and early 2022, the United States and the United Kingdom possessed detailed intelligence regarding Russia's intent to attack Ukraine. Some of this data on Russian plans was shared with Ukraine through official and intelligence channels. During this period, Russian intelligence structures significantly expanded their agent and sabotage networks within Ukraine ahead of the invasion, attempting to establish contacts with both high-ranking officials and lower-level state apparatus representatives.
Escalation Scenarios and Ukrainian Resistance
Within the GUR structure, non-public preparatory measures were conducted, including contingency planning. Scenarios for a sharp escalation, including a potential attack on the capital, were planned. Under the guise of training exercises, a series of security and logistical solutions were organized. The airport in Hostomel was viewed as the key element in the operation to seize Kyiv, and the Hostomel operation itself was the central component of the Russian invasion plan. Moscow was counting on rapidly establishing control over the capital.
However, Ukrainian resistance, particularly the battles for Hostomel, Moshchun, and Irpin, shattered this scenario. At the moment of invasion, Ukrainian security forces were operating under conditions of high uncertainty. Russia significantly overestimated its own capabilities and underestimated Ukraine's readiness to resist.
“The heart of the plan was the tactical air assault landing at Hostomel.”
Kyrylo Budanov
Thus, the GUR's preparation for a potential invasion and the active resistance of Ukrainian forces became decisive factors that influenced the development of events in the first days of the war.
This information underscores the importance of intelligence work and preparation for potential threats, and demonstrates how strategic planning can influence the course of military actions. The successful resistance of Ukrainian forces in the first days of the invasion not only altered the trajectory of the conflict but also served as a signal to the international community about the seriousness of the situation in Ukraine, which subsequently led to increased support from Western nations.
