Ukraine’s Intelligence Reveals the True Size of Belarus’s Military

Аналіз української розвідки виявив реальні масштаби збройних сил Білорусі.

New Insights into Belarus’s Armed Forces

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has released fresh data on Belarus’s military, detailing its personnel numbers, organizational structure, recruitment methods, and weaponry priorities. According to the intelligence report, the total strength of Belarus’s armed forces stands at approximately 70,000 people, including 20,000 civilian staff. The active military personnel count is 48,810, with overall staffing levels at 69.7% of authorized positions.

Structure and Armament Focus

Key components of Belarus’s military include:

  • Ground forces: 13,810 personnel;
  • Air Force and Air Defense troops: 11,040 personnel;
  • Special Operations Forces: 6,400 personnel.

The army uses a mixed recruitment system: 60% are contract soldiers, and 40% are conscripts. The most numerous equipment categories include armored fighting vehicles, artillery systems, tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

Belarus’s state armament program, shaped by lessons from modern conflicts, prioritizes electronic warfare systems, reconnaissance, communications, counter-battery capabilities, and short-range air defense. HUR notes that the threat from Belarus remains potential but limited in scope.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an ultimatum to Alexander Lukashenko regarding military equipment at the border, stating that Belarus has repeatedly received warnings to stop aiding Russia—specifically by providing signal repeaters that help coordinate strikes by Russian and Iranian drones.

A meeting between the presidents of Russia and Belarus is expected soon to discuss Zelenskyy’s remarks about the repeaters. According to Zelenskyy, he understands that Ukraine will respond to any potential threats.

This intelligence on Belarus’s armed forces underscores the need to monitor military activity in neighboring countries as part of regional security efforts. Given ongoing threats from Russia, Belarus’s tactical decisions and arms plans could significantly affect the situation in Ukraine. The military cooperation between Minsk and Moscow remains a key factor requiring close attention from Ukrainian authorities and defense analysts.

As tensions escalate, Ukraine has strategically identified key military targets in Belarus to deter potential aggression. This proactive approach complements the recent intelligence highlights on Belarus’s military capabilities and underscores the importance of vigilance in the region.
