Russian Attacks on Substations: Ukraine's Nuclear Power Plants Operating at Reduced Capacity

Українські АЕС працюють з обмеженнями через атаки на енергетичну інфраструктуру.

The latest news from the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants is not encouraging — due to enemy strikes on substations that are critically important for nuclear safety, the plants are operating at reduced capacity. This information was provided by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, citing 'Ukrinform'.

According to Grossi, armed conflicts across Ukraine negatively affect the power grid, leading to substations operating with damage and inadequate protection, which poses a threat to nuclear safety.

Repair and Restoration of External Power Supply

In May, the Zaporizhzhia NPP was disconnected from external power transmission lines, but thanks to successful negotiations by the IAEA with Ukraine and Russia, repairs began on October 18 for the 'Dniprovska' and 'Ferrosplavna' lines. Production capacities have now been restored, and external power supply has been reestablished.

«To maintain nuclear safety and to avoid severe consequences from radiation, we need to act with restraint,» — called Rafael Grossi.

The Director General of the IAEA took the next step in addressing nuclear safety issues, not naming Russia as the aggressor, but emphasizing the importance of preventing serious radiation accidents.
