Shift in Frontline Momentum Toward Ukraine's Defense Forces

Retired U.S. Army Europe Commander General Ben Hodges has stated that the momentum on the battlefield has shifted in favor of Ukraine's defense forces. He pointed to three key factors behind this turning point:

  • the depletion of Russian military forces;
  • Ukrainian strikes targeting Russia's oil infrastructure;
  • a growing recognition across Europe of the need to support Ukraine.

According to Hodges, Russia no longer has a realistic chance of defeating Ukraine, as its troop losses have for the first time exceeded its capacity to recruit new soldiers. This has resulted in a lack of significant territorial gains by Russian forces for several months.

Ukraine's Strategy for Victory

Hodges emphasized that Ukraine has developed a winning strategy focused on crippling Russia's ability to export oil and gas. He noted that

“they now have enough long-range precision weapons capable of hitting oil refineries more than a thousand kilometers deep inside Russia”
- Ben Hodges. Rising discontent among Russian military bloggers and YouTube users regarding the war and President Putin's policies also signals internal problems within Russia.
“Even if half of them are fake, it still indicates growing dissatisfaction”
- the general stressed.

Hodges also pointed out that the United States is unlikely to be part of the solution for Ukraine, as the U.S. president continues to echo Kremlin talking points. He stated:

“It's clear that the United States will not be part of the solution. At least not for Ukraine”
- Ben Hodges. In terms of international support, Hodges highlighted that Germany is leading aid efforts for Ukraine, while other nations are also scaling up their contributions. The defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán removed a major obstacle to the European Union's aid package.

He observed that Ukraine has compensated for its infantry shortages by deploying drones, which have created a zone along the front line where Russian soldiers in open terrain are highly vulnerable. However, Hodges cautioned that the current defensive strategy will not allow Ukraine to reclaim occupied territories. To transition to maneuver warfare, Ukraine will require new technological solutions based on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

The general also expressed the view that

“the best way to prevent a Russian invasion of the rest of Europe is to help Ukraine defeat Russia”
- Ben Hodges. At the same time, he stressed that
“you cannot win this way. You cannot move in the opposite direction”
- Ben Hodges. Hodges concluded his remarks by stating, “Your choice is this: either Ukraine fails, and then the Russians will be at your doorstep, or you help Ukraine financially, materially, and by blocking shadow fleet tankers carrying Russian oil.”

General Hodges' statements underscore the critical importance of international support for Ukraine amid mounting challenges for Russia. With the Russian army's capabilities dwindling and Ukrainian operations intensifying, the situation on the front line could undergo significant changes. Moving forward, Ukraine may need cutting-edge technologies—beyond the drones already deployed—to sustain successful combat operations and regain control of occupied territories.

As the situation on the battlefield evolves, the insights from various experts are becoming increasingly significant. Notably, the recent statements by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also indicate a similar shift in momentum favoring Ukraine, highlighting the international community's growing acknowledgment of the need to bolster support for the country amidst these developments.
