Illia Zabarnyi Reports for Ukraine Duty After Champions League Triumph

Ukraine and Paris Saint-Germain defender Illia Zabarnyi has arrived at the national team's training camp in Lviv, following his victory in the Champions League final. He is set to prepare for a friendly match against Denmark and will meet new head coach Andrea Maldera for the first time. Zabarnyi missed the early part of the camp due to his participation in the 2025/26 Champions League final for PSG, where his side defeated London's Arsenal 1-1 (4-3 on penalties).

Zabarnyi's Historic Achievements

Illia Zabarnyi became a Champions League winner after coming on as a substitute in extra time, playing the final 15 minutes of the match. This title marks his first in his debut season with PSG, adding to his Ligue 1 championship medal. Zabarnyi is now the fourth Ukrainian footballer in history to win the Champions League and holds the record as the youngest captain ever for the Ukrainian national team. For his country, he has made 53 appearances and scored three goals.

Ukraine's next friendly is scheduled against Denmark on Sunday, June 7, with kickoff at 19:30 Kyiv time. Prior to this, the national team secured a 2-0 victory in a friendly against Poland. That match marked Andrea Maldera's debut as head coach, with goals from Yaremchuk and Yarmolenko.

Under new coach Andrea Maldera, the team has an opportunity to refine its gameplay, which could positively impact results in future competitions. The friendly against Denmark will serve as an important test of the squad's strength and preparation ahead of official fixtures.

Following his Champions League success, Zabarnyi's achievements are not only a personal milestone but also a significant boost for the Ukrainian national team. As they prepare for their upcoming match against Denmark, the experience he gained at PSG will be invaluable for the squad under the new leadership of Andrea Maldera.
