FIFA President Comments on Refereeing Dispute

Referee François Letexier consulted the VAR system and ruled a foul on Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez at the start of the attack, leading to the goal being overturned and a free kick awarded to Argentina.
At the time of the disallowed goal, Egypt was leading 1-0. Argentina then managed to come back from a 0-2 deficit and snatch a late win. “Before I say anything, let me clarify something. I have worked in football for decades, collaborated with referees for many years, participated in competitions, and studied the rules of the game. When a decision sparks so much global controversy, it is my duty to fully understand what happened. That is why I reviewed this incident more than ten times,” said Gianni Infantino.
He also emphasized that he examined all camera angles and VAR audio recordings and found no evidence of intentional bias toward either side. “People have every right to question decisions. People have every right to disagree. But disagreement should never automatically become proof of a conspiracy,” Infantino added, acknowledging the disappointment of Egyptian fans and the support of Argentine fans. He also stated that if the refereeing department believes improvements are needed, they will review every incident just as they do after every major match, because that is how football continues to evolve.
