Resource for Working with Those Released from Captivity

As part of the all-Ukrainian mental health program “How Are You?”, initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska, a comprehensive practical resource has been presented. It is designed to help people who have returned from captivity and includes several key components.

Resource Components

The resource consists of several important elements:

  • directory “Life and Service After Captivity”,
  • educational series “Do No Harm: Support After Release from Captivity” consisting of 10 episodes,
  • video instructions that will be available on social media under the brand “How Are You?”.

Its goal is to facilitate the process of adaptation and return to normal life after the experiences endured. Such initiatives are particularly important in the context of post-traumatic rehabilitation, which requires a delicate and professional approach.

The development of the resource was carried out in collaboration with DIGNITY – Danish Institute Against Torture, with funding provided by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Expert and analytical support for the project was provided by:

  • Coordination Center for Mental Health of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine,
  • Department of Reintegration Activities of the Main Directorate of Civil-Military Cooperation of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,
  • Ministry of Veterans Affairs.

The media partner of the project was Starlight Media, and technical support was provided by the public organization “Barrier-Free”.

The implementation of this resource is a significant step in supporting people who have experienced the trauma of captivity. The initiative is aimed not only at psychological rehabilitation but also at social adaptation, helping individuals find their place in society after a difficult experience. The joint efforts of government bodies, international partners, and media demonstrate the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing issues related to the consequences of military actions and the restoration of the lives of those affected. The use of modern formats, such as educational series and videos, makes information more accessible to a wide audience.
