Footballer Sardar Azmoun Targeted by Iranian Authorities

Iranian authorities have accused national team footballer Sardar Azmoun of supporting Israel and the United States and are now planning to confiscate his property. This action follows his earlier removal from the Iranian national squad, which was prompted by a photograph he posted with Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Iranian officials deemed the photo an act of disloyalty and a gesture of support for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This case highlights the intense political pressures faced by Iranian athletes who engage internationally.

According to the Fars news agency, Azmoun is among 16 individuals listed in an order by the prosecutor's office in Iran's Golestan province to have their assets seized for the state. All those named reside outside Iran and are suspected of aiding enemy states, specifically Israel and the U.S.

Execution of Iranian Wrestler Sparks Outcry

In a separate development, news has emerged of the execution of 19-year-old Iranian wrestler Saleh Mohammad. Mohammad, who had won a medal in an international tournament in 2024. The execution has drawn condemnation from athletes worldwide, including skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych and seven other international sports stars, who have criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its response.

Heraskevych stated: 'Another example of the IOC's questionable stance. When it suits the IOC, they are part of politics. Likewise, when it's convenient, they become apolitical. When it comes to banning Russian athletes, they supposedly should be allowed to compete because the IOC is above politics, but when I wear a helmet in tribute to fallen Ukrainian athletes, the IOC instantly becomes a political expert and sees a political act where no one else in the world does. Here we have the horrific news that the Iranian dictatorship executed a young athlete, and one might think an organization that considers peace-building a core mission would condemn it. But no—they are again hiding behind their so-called apolitical position.'

These events underscore the complex intersection of global sports, politics, and human rights. The situations involving Azmoun and Mohammad raise serious questions about the response of international bodies to the persecution of athletes and highlight how sports figures advocating for justice often face reprisals in their home countries, challenging the effectiveness of international human rights norms in sports.

The ongoing turmoil in Iranian sports is further exemplified by the recent execution of 19-year-old wrestling champion Saleh Mohammad, which has sparked widespread outrage among athletes globally. This incident not only underscores the severe consequences faced by athletes in Iran but also raises questions about the international community's response to such human rights violations.
