Iran’s National Team Prepared to Stop Games Over Political Provocations

Ahmad Donyamali, Iran’s Minister of Sports, has stated that the national team is ready to walk off the field during the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they face political provocations. This decision follows growing concerns among Iranian players, who fear they may encounter protests in American stadiums. Donyamali warned that

“if the team faces political provocations or protests in the stands of U.S. stadiums,”
they would be forced to take serious action.

Training Base Moved to Mexico and Tournament Challenges

Iran’s squad has relocated its training camp to Tijuana, Mexico, after encountering visa issues for crossing the U.S. border. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum officially confirmed the move. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has only allowed Iranian players to enter the country one day before each match. Iran’s first Group G game is set for June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand, with Belgium and Egypt also in the group.

  • The Iran vs. Egypt match is scheduled for June 26 in Seattle.
  • Organizers have designated this game as Pride in honor of LGBTQ+ weekend, sparking outrage from both Iran’s and Egypt’s football federations.
  • Both federations have demanded FIFA block any LGBTQ+ activities during the match.

In April, activists at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver called for Iran to be disqualified, further complicating the team’s situation. U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed concern, stating that

“playing in the States could be dangerous for them, for their own safety.”
Under these circumstances, Iran’s national team faces numerous hurdles that could affect their participation in the tournament.

The situation surrounding Iran’s World Cup team highlights the broader political and social tensions that can spill into sports. The intersection of politics and international sporting events is becoming increasingly evident, especially on the global stage. With protest sentiments and federation demands growing, upcoming matches may become not just athletic contests but symbolic flashpoints reflecting cultural and political divides. This could impact the tournament’s overall image and the experience of players caught at the center of international disputes.

As tensions escalate, the situation for Iranian fans has also become precarious, with access to tickets for the 2026 World Cup being restricted by U.S. policies. This development adds another layer of complexity to Iran's participation in the tournament, reflecting the broader challenges faced by the national team and its supporters in the context of political unrest.
