Global Attention Turns to Tehran’s Response to Washington’s Proposal

The international community is awaiting Iran’s answer to a U.S. initiative aimed at ending a conflict that began on February 28. Iran’s leadership has greeted the proposal with skepticism. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on May 6, Donald Trump described negotiations over the previous 24 hours as “very good.” He also posted on Truth Social that securing Tehran’s agreement would be a major assumption. At the same time, Trump threatened to resume large-scale bombing if no deal is reached.

Memorandum Nears Completion as Iran Voices Reservations

The two sides are close to signing a short memorandum that would formally conclude the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and impose nuclear restrictions on Iran’s program in exchange for a gradual lifting of sanctions. The Strait of Hormuz, which before the conflict carried one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas exports, remains a central element of the agreement. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that Tehran is reviewing the text of the memorandum and will provide a response in due course.

However, Iranian officials have already expressed doubts about the proposal. Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of parliament’s security committee, described the U.S. offer as

“a wish list, not reality”
- Ebrahim Rezaei. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf also weighed in with criticism, stating that the U.S. strategy of
“Trust me, brother”
has failed. He called reports of an imminent peace a media manipulation by Washington following unsuccessful attempts to unblock the strait by force.

As a result, despite positive signals from the United States, the situation remains tense, and Iran’s response to the proposal could significantly shape the course of events. With the international community hoping for stability in the region, any decision from Tehran may not only alter the conflict’s dynamics but also impact global markets, particularly concerning the energy resources that transit the Strait of Hormuz.

As the situation unfolds, many are questioning whether a new agreement could effectively prevent Iran from advancing its nuclear ambitions. The complexities surrounding the negotiations and the implications of Trump's stance on these stalled talks could play a crucial role in shaping the future of peace in the region.
