Ukraine to Boycott Opening Ceremony as Iran Withdraws from 2026 Paralympics

Українська команда пропустить урочисте відкриття через відсутність Ірану на Паралімпійських іграх 2026 року.

Iranian Team Pulls Out of 2026 Paralympic Games

The Iranian national team has withdrawn from the 2026 Paralympic Games in Italy, a decision confirmed by the International Paralympic Committee's press service. According to the announcement, only one Iranian athlete was scheduled to compete: cross-country skier Abolfazl Khatibi Mianaei, who was set to participate in races on March 10 and 11, 2026.

Opening Ceremony Boycott and Reasons for Withdrawal

The Paralympics opening ceremony is scheduled for March 6, 2026, with competitions running until March 15, 2026. A key factor in Iran's withdrawal is the International Paralympic Committee's decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags. In response, Ukraine and several other European nations have decided to boycott the Games' opening ceremony.

Ukraine's public broadcaster, Suspilne, has also announced it will not air the 2026 Paralympics opening ceremony, though it will continue to broadcast all performances by Ukrainian Paralympians. A decision regarding coverage of the closing ceremony has not yet been announced.

Iran's withdrawal highlights the broader political tensions affecting international sport, stemming from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This move reflects a growing pattern of nations using sporting events to make political statements, which could reshape participation and alliances in future competitions. The situation underscores how geopolitical disputes are increasingly impacting the world of elite athletics.
