ISW Records Russia’s Worst Military Setback Since August 2024: 116 Square Kilometers Lost in April

Втрата російських позицій: 116 квадратних кілометрів у квітні 2024 року.

Russian Army’s April 2026 Failure

According to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), April 2026 marked an unprecedented failure for the Russian military. During that month, Moscow lost control over 116 square kilometers of territory—the most severe negative shift in battlefield dynamics since August 2024. The pace of Russian advances dropped to just 2.9 square kilometers per day, three times slower than the same period the previous year.

Between November 2025 and April 2026, Russian forces managed to seize 1,443 square kilometers of land. For comparison, during the same stretch one year earlier, that figure stood at 2,368 square kilometers. This sharp decline highlights a major drop in the effectiveness of Russian military operations.

Root Causes of the Setback

Several key factors contributed to this failure:

  • Starlink being blocked in occupied areas, which disrupted communications;
  • Kremlin-imposed restrictions on Telegram, affecting information flow;
  • devastating strikes on Russian depots and command centers, severely damaging military infrastructure;
  • an unusually harsh winter followed by spring mud that impeded movement.

It is worth noting that many of the territories Russia claims to control remain contested, with actual occupation authority being minimal. The Kremlin is attempting to downplay the failure by employing a strategy of creeping into gray zones. During this same period, Ukrainian defense forces also stepped up their activity, striking two vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet near the port of Novorossiysk. These events underscore ongoing regional tensions and the mounting challenges facing the Russian army as Ukrainian forces increase their operations.

This report highlights the serious difficulties confronting the Russian military amid growing Ukrainian activity. The slowdown in territorial advances and the loss of ground may signal a shift in the strategic situation on the front lines. The situation remains fluid, and future developments could significantly alter the overall trajectory of the conflict.

The recent military setbacks for Russia are further underscored by a notable decline in territorial acquisitions, reflecting a broader trend of slowing occupation efforts. In April, Russian forces experienced an 11.9% drop in land gains, indicating significant challenges in sustaining their advance. This decline not only highlights the ongoing difficulties faced by the Russian military but also the resilience of Ukrainian defenses amidst increasing hostilities.
