Support for Ukraine and the EU Sanctions Package
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has thrown her weight behind the European Union’s proposal to appoint a single representative to negotiate with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine. She argued that this approach would prevent conflicting statements from individual member states and would not signal any softening of the West’s stance. Meloni stressed the need to maintain strong economic and political pressure on Moscow until Russia responds to calls for a ceasefire and genuine negotiations.
“We are not changing course. I am convinced that providing Kyiv with everything it needs and keeping up pressure on Moscow remain the only effective tools to create the groundwork for real dialogue. That is precisely why Italy supports the adoption of the 20th EU sanctions package.” – Giorgia Meloni
She also stated that Ukraine’s future accession to the EU is a strategic necessity. “For us, Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is a fundamental security factor for the entire continent. Kyiv must continue implementing the necessary reforms and strengthening the rule of law,” the prime minister added.
Italy and Future Sanctions
Italy is firmly backing the approval of the 20th EU sanctions package, which is scheduled for the European Council summit on June 18–19. Rome insists it is not shifting its tough line toward the Kremlin, and that continued comprehensive military aid to Kyiv remains the only way to push Moscow toward diplomacy. It was noted that Ukraine’s EU integration process must be based on the candidate country’s actual achievements.
Additionally, Giorgia Meloni criticized the potential participation of Vladimir Putin in the G20 summit, set for December 2026 in the United States. It is worth noting that Italy’s efforts in supporting Ukraine and pressuring Russia remain at a high level, underscoring its role in shaping European security policy.
Meloni’s statements reflect Italy’s strategy of backing Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and highlight the importance of European Union unity in this matter. Support for the new sanctions package and calls for increased military aid to Kyiv demonstrate Rome’s desire to strengthen the West’s position in talks with Moscow. Ukraine’s EU membership, as the prime minister noted, is seen as a key security element for the entire continent, which could shape future relations between Ukraine and the European Union.
