Italian Cyclist Disqualified from Giro d’Italia for Headbutting a Rival

Італійський велогонщик усунений від участі у Джиро д'Італія за агресивну поведінку на трасі.

Incident at the 2026 Giro d’Italia

Italian rider Enrico Zanoncello of team Bardiani-CSF-7 Faizanè was disqualified from the 2026 Giro d’Italia following Stage 15. The decision came after a clash on the final meters of the race in Milan, where Zanoncello struck competitor Bob Donaldson of team Jayco-AlUla with his head. The impact sent Donaldson crashing onto the asphalt at high speed, tearing his race suit and leaving him with multiple abrasions, though he suffered no serious fractures.

Penalty and Reactions

Zanoncello, a 28-year-old sprinter, was fined 500 Swiss francs, issued a yellow card, and lost 13 points in the sprinters’ classification. The official violation cited deviation from his chosen trajectory in a way that endangered another rider. Under UCI rules, a disqualification usually follows two yellow cards in a single race, but the race jury deemed Zanoncello’s aggressive behavior dangerous and imposed an immediate direct disqualification.

This stage was Zanoncello’s third as the lead sprinter for his team. Fredrik Dversnes took the stage win. Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard and other team captains agreed with organizers to exclude the final 5 kilometers of the stage from the general classification, given the circumstances of the incident.

Zanoncello stated that he 'had no intention of harming anyone, and leaving the race this way was very painful for him.'

Zanoncello’s disqualification sends a strong message to all riders about the importance of adhering to safety rules during competition. The incident also highlights how aggressive on-road behavior can lead to dangerous situations that threaten athletes’ well-being. In a sport where speed and competition take center stage, it remains crucial to uphold basic ethics and safety standards.

The recent disqualification of Enrico Zanoncello has sparked discussions about rider safety and aggressive tactics in cycling.
