Ivan Marchuk's 90th Birthday
On May 12, 2023, Ivan Marchuk, a People's Artist of Ukraine, celebrated his 90th birthday. On this occasion, he shared memories of how his family survived Soviet terror, including his father's activities while hiding from the NKVD—making crosses for fallen insurgents. Born on May 12, 1936, in the village of Moskalivka in the Ternopil region, Marchuk is also a recipient of the Taras Shevchenko Prize. His life and work offer a powerful window into Ukraine's turbulent 20th-century history.
Although Marchuk's father had only three years of formal education, he was a gifted craftsman. He built a loom to weave carpets and blankets, and he also made baskets. One of his most dangerous tasks was carving birch crosses for deceased rebels, a job he took with utmost seriousness.
“There were few birch trees in my village. But when such an order came, my father would carve a cross by hand at night, being very careful not to leave any birch shavings behind. If someone reported him, he would be punished. By morning, mournful songs would echo through the village...”

Artistic Journey and Achievements
In his recollections, the artist also described the horrors his family endured: “The NKVD often came to our village to catch so-called 'bandits.' They would also enter our home. At those times, my father would hide on the stove he had built himself. We, four children, would cover him to save him.”
Marchuk graduated from school with honors, and his artistic path proved remarkably successful. He invented his own painting technique known as plontanism, which became a defining feature of his work. On his birthday, a permanent exhibition of his pieces opened at the 'Chocolate House' art center in Kyiv.
Additionally, one of his paintings, 'Peace Has Settled Here,' was recently sold at a Sotheby's auction for 72,000 euros—nearly 30% above its pre-sale estimate of 40,000 to 60,000 euros.
His series 'Shevchenkiana' and other works have gained widespread recognition, cementing his status as one of Ukraine's most significant painters.
Marchuk's ninth decade marks a major milestone for Ukrainian culture. His art and memories of hardship reflect not only his personal story but also the collective memory of the nation. The exhibition of his works and the auction success highlight the growing international interest in Ukrainian art, as well as the enduring legacy of an artist deeply rooted in Ukraine's history and cultural identity.
As Ivan Marchuk reflects on his remarkable life and the trials his family faced, it's worth noting the growing recognition of his artistic contributions.
