Who Is Ivan Marchuk?

According to Главком: Born on May 12, 1936, in the village of Moskalivka in the Ternopil region, Ivan Marchuk is a celebrated Ukrainian artist. He holds the titles of People’s Artist of Ukraine and recipient of the Taras Shevchenko Prize. Marchuk independently developed his signature technique, known as plontanism. He studied at the Ivan Trush Lviv School of Decorative and Applied Arts and discovered his unique artistic style in 1965 while in Kyiv. In 1988, he was admitted to the Union of Artists of Ukraine and later that year departed for the United States.

During his 12-year period abroad, Marchuk lived not only in the U.S. but also traveled to Australia and Canada. He returned to Ukraine after the September 11, 2001 attacks. In 2006, he was recognized as a member of the Golden Guild of the International Academy of Modern Art in Rome. The following year, The Daily Telegraph ranked him among the 100 greatest living geniuses.

The Battle Over the Artist’s Legacy

In 2016, Marchuk stated that he had never sold any of his paintings. However, on May 21, 2020, a licensing agreement was signed between Marchuk and four individuals, under which the artist supposedly received 10,000 Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $360 at the 2020 exchange rate). The contract entitled him to a 5% royalty, yet no payments were ever made to Marchuk under this deal. A Kyiv court subsequently imposed a seizure on four paintings and a sheet featuring an animal image.
