Deceived into Fighting for Russia: The Plight of Cameroonian Footballers

Вимушені стати на захист чужих інтересів: історія камерунецьких футболістів.

A Tragic War Story of Young Athletes

In 2025, amid the ongoing conflict, Cameroonian footballers were tricked into joining Russian military operations. One such case involves 19-year-old defender Mewoungou Mbe Stevis Astrid, who lived in Cameroon's capital, Yaoundé, and played for the reserve squad of Canon Yaoundé. Stevis, along with his brother and a friend, was offered a chance to try out in Russia. A sports club intermediary then gave them documents in Russian to sign, which they did not fully understand.

Upon arriving in Moscow, Stevis was taken directly to a military enlistment office. During combat, Stevis's brother was captured, and his friend was killed in an assault. Stevis himself sustained three minor injuries but remained in the conflict zone. He noted:

Athletes on the Frontlines

Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense forces eliminated Russian occupiers who had sports backgrounds. Among them was 46-year-old Georgy Kamalov, who played for the team Era Vladivostok from 2003 to 2011. Kamalov ended his playing career due to injury and in recent years worked with the football club Anri, leading it to the level of the Russian Cup.

Ukrainian forces also killed Russian occupier Chingiz Dodiev, originally from Buryatia. Born on December 1, 1993, in the village of Baragkhan, Dodiev earned the title of Master of Sports in hand-to-hand combat and was a Candidate for Master of Sports in army hand-to-hand combat, as well as in universal karate Ukado/Kempo. He held a black belt, 2nd dan, in self-defense, was a three-time champion of the Russian Cup in universal karate Ukado/Kempo, a two-time champion of the Northwest in hand-to-hand combat among law enforcement agencies, a three-time medalist of the Trans-Baikal Territory in army hand-to-hand combat, and a medalist of the Republic of Buryatia in combat sambo.

These events highlight the tragic consequences of war, not only for young athletes who fell into deceptive traps but also for those who had successful sports careers and ended up on the frontlines.

This case underscores the risks young athletes face when seeking career opportunities abroad. The war in Ukraine and its aftermath continue to endanger many people, exposing them to peril and loss. Athletes with potential for success have become victims of the conflict, demonstrating how military actions hinder talent development and lead to personal tragedies.

As the conflict continues to unfold, the stories of athletes caught in the crossfire are becoming increasingly poignant. The recent fate of Cameroonian footballers highlights a troubling trend, echoing the tragic experiences of other sports figures, such as two Russian players who were killed while serving as occupiers.
