Innovative Method to Eliminate Pesticides from Fruit Surfaces
Scientists in Canada have engineered a novel treatment capable of washing away as much as 96% of pesticides lingering on fruit skins while simultaneously forming a protective film that helps preserve their freshness. This breakthrough formula combines three key ingredients: starch nanoparticles, plant-derived tannic acid, and an iron-based compound. The starch acts as a foundational matrix, tannins bind with pesticide residues, and iron creates a robust micro-network to hold everything together.
Proven Effectiveness on Common Fruits
Testing this solution on apples revealed it could remove over 85% of the fungicide thiabendazole, significantly outperforming plain running water, which only eliminates 48%, and baking soda solutions, which achieve 65%. Additionally, the formula neutralized approximately 90% of insecticides such as acetamiprid and imidacloprid. It is important to note that this treatment works only on the fruit’s surface and does not extract toxins embedded within the flesh.
After application, the treated fruits retain an ultra-thin, breathable coating. During a 15-day trial, grapes treated with this method lost just 21% of their weight compared to a 45% loss in untreated grapes. Furthermore, sliced apples treated with the solution resisted browning longer when exposed to air. The raw materials required to produce this treatment cost less than 3.2 US cents per apple.
This technology is currently being prepared for large-scale deployment in agricultural operations and storage facilities. Researchers are also developing a safe spray version for convenient home use. The findings were published on September 9, 2026.
