Carlos Queiroz Leaves His Role as Ghana’s National Team Coach

Carlos Queiroz has departed from his position as head coach of the Ghana national football team following their elimination from the World Cup. His tenure lasted just three months, after he replaced Otto Addo, who was unable to prepare the squad for the 2026 World Cup. Ghana began their group stage campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama, with midfielder Irenky scoring the only goal. The team then played to a 0-0 draw against England, but suffered a 1-2 defeat to Croatia in their final group match. Defender Lukassen found the net for Ghana in that loss. Despite the defeat, Ghana advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

Performance at the 2026 World Cup

In the Round of 16, Ghana fell 0-1 to Colombia. This run marked the team’s best World Cup performance since 2010, when they reached the quarterfinals. It is worth noting that Ghana’s showing at the 2010 tournament was significantly stronger than their current campaign.

Football, like life, teaches us one eternal lesson: either you win or you learn. I leave this journey proud of what we achieved, but also with a healthy discontent of those who always aspired for more. Reaching a higher level should never be the final goal—it is the beginning of even greater ambitions.
Carlos Queiroz

Queiroz, born in Mozambique during colonial times and who moved to Lisbon in 1975, brings a wealth of coaching experience. He has worked with Portugal’s youth and U-21 teams, and also managed the senior Portuguese national side. His achievements include triumphs at the U-20 World Cup and the European Under-16 Championship. Queiroz has also coached clubs such as Sporting Lisbon and Real Madrid, and served as an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

After a brief stint with Ghana, Queiroz leaves a team that, despite an imperfect performance, showed promise on the international stage.

Queiroz’s departure opens a new chapter for Ghana, as the team now has the chance to appoint a new coach capable of unlocking the players’ potential and achieving stronger results in future international competitions. Although their 2026 World Cup run ended early, it still represented progress compared to recent years, and the next manager can build on this experience to further develop the squad.

While Queiroz's departure marks the end of his brief tenure, it also highlights his achievement of breaking Otto Rehhagel's World Cup record during the tournament. This accomplishment adds an intriguing layer to his coaching legacy, reflecting both his capability and the challenges faced by the team.
