Lyme Disease Cases on the Rise in Kyiv

Lyme disease infections are climbing in Kyiv, with more than half of all cases linked to city parks and green areas. In the first months of 2026, 12 cases have already been recorded—six of them resulting from tick bites in the capital’s parks. Serhiy Chumak, Kyiv’s Chief State Sanitary Doctor, reported that the number of ticks carrying the Lyme disease pathogen has increased by 12% compared to last year. This trend reflects a broader regional challenge, as ticks are becoming more common in urban environments across Eastern Europe.

Last year, Kyiv recorded 649 Lyme disease cases, 350 of which were contracted within the city itself—in parks, beaches, and other green zones. For the same period in 2025, only 14 cases were reported. In response, city authorities have begun treating parks with anti-tick measures. This treatment will continue throughout April and May, and residents are advised to avoid treated areas for three days after application.

Symptoms and Prevention of Lyme Disease

Early-stage Lyme disease symptoms include:

  • redness at the bite site;
  • fever up to 38°C;
  • chills;
  • fatigue;
  • muscle and joint pain;
  • swollen lymph nodes.

Without timely treatment, neurological complications such as paralysis, meningitis, and encephalitis can develop. Chumak emphasized:

“The tick population has grown, and worse, the proportion of ticks carrying the Lyme disease pathogen has also increased—as confirmed by laboratory tests.”

To reduce the risk of tick bites, experts recommend:

  • using insect repellents;
  • wearing light-colored clothing;
  • covering exposed skin;
  • checking yourself and pets every two hours during outdoor activities.

If bitten, seek immediate care at a trauma center and consult an infectious disease specialist. After park treatments, follow guidelines: avoid treated zones for three days, do not walk pets there, and thoroughly wash hands and animal paws after walks.

The rise in Lyme disease cases in Kyiv mirrors a broader increase in tick populations, likely driven by climate change and urbanization. Since most infections occur in city parks, local authorities must maintain preventive measures and keep the public informed about tick-related risks. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe long-term complications.

As urban green spaces in Kyiv become increasingly hazardous due to rising tick populations, it is essential for residents to stay informed about effective prevention strategies.
