Suspect Charged in Kyiv
Authorities in Kyiv have charged a man who set up a scheme to sell combat and modified firearms through a network of parcel lockers. Investigators determined that the suspect personally converted weapons into combat-ready condition, then shipped them to buyers using lockers in the Obolon and Podil districts. To avoid detection, he used fake personal details and borrowed mobile phone numbers.
Law enforcement documented the shipment of packages containing parts of a Fort-12RM short-barreled pistol modified for combat use, as well as components for an M4A1 automatic rifle with all serial numbers completely removed. The seller expected to receive 200,000 Ukrainian hryvnias for his illegal goods. He now faces up to seven years in prison, and this is not his first offense—four separate indictments for similar weapons-related crimes are already pending against him in court.
Group Dismantled
Separately, the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police dismantled a group that had prepared a large batch of captured weapons for underground sale. Officers arrested the group's organizer, two accomplices, and three criminals attempting to sell the weapons. Items seized include:
- 75 firearms, including Kalashnikov assault rifles
- 38 combat grenades
- more than 20 detonators
- two grenade launchers
- 13,000 rounds of ammunition
In the Volyn region, police uncovered a group involved in illegal arms sales. According to the investigation, the organizer is a 49-year-old native of Mariupol who resides in the Kyiv region. He recruited his 39-year-old partner and a 51-year-old friend to find customers and transport weapons to buyers.
These events highlight a stepped-up effort by Ukrainian law enforcement to combat illegal arms trafficking, a serious issue given the current security situation. Detecting and arresting participants in such schemes can help reduce risks associated with illegal weapons in criminal cases and potential conflicts. Improved law enforcement effectiveness may signal a shift in how the country approaches public safety.
In a related development, law enforcement has intensified efforts to uncover illegal arms caches, as evidenced by a recent operation that revealed a hidden stockpile of grenades and ammunition in the Kyiv region. This ongoing crackdown underscores the serious threat posed by the illicit arms trade in Ukraine, making it crucial for residents to stay informed about these activities.
