Maxim Ostapenko's Statements on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
In an interview with the publication Glavcom, Maxim Ostapenko, the Director General of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, stated that during Ukraine's 2013 Euromaidan protests, Russia used the Lavra as a center for special operations. He noted that in 2013, Russian oligarchs held an exhibition at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra where the head of security was Igor Girkin (also known as Strelkov). The 'Anti-Maidan' movement was stationed near the Lavra, and Russian agents were active there, using the site against the Ukrainian people, according to Ostapenko. The Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage site, making its alleged use for covert operations particularly significant.
The Need for the Lavra's Transformation
Ostapenko emphasized that the consequences of these actions are evident. He stated:
“Let's face it: for them, the so-called 'spiritual bonds,' our cultural heritage sites which they consider their own, are no less important than entire cities for which they sacrifice tens of thousands of their soldiers' lives.”This is directly linked to the influence they exerted on Ukraine through these places, specifically the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
Ostapenko also expressed the necessity of transforming the Lavra after the war. One potential model for renewal could be an approach similar to that of the British Museum, where entry is free for visitors. This transformation could foster a new perception of the Lavra as a cultural object, free from political influence. Such a move would align it with major global institutions that prioritize public access and cultural education over political symbolism.
The statements by Maxim Ostapenko confirm the importance of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra not only as a religious site but also as a cultural symbol of Ukraine that has been subject to external influence. The prospect of recasting the Lavra as a cultural institution free from political manipulation could be a key step in restoring Ukraine's image internationally. These changes could help preserve and promote Ukrainian cultural heritage in the face of Russia's ongoing aggression.
