Kyiv Prepares Buses Instead of Metro During Blackouts: Why the Idea Raises Doubts

Київ запускає нові автобусні маршрути у відповідь на проблеми з електропостачанням: чому реформа викликає запитання.

Transport Problems in Kyiv

The Kyiv authorities plan to launch additional bus routes instead of the metro in case of prolonged blackouts. This decision has raised doubts among experts, including the former Minister of Transport of Ukraine, Vasyl Shevchenko. He points out that the main problem for passengers during the morning rush hour is the lack of safety, as the metro stops during air alerts, especially on bridges.

In an interview with the publication 'Telegraph', Shevchenko emphasized that the Kyiv metro covers only 30% of its own expenses, which calls into question the feasibility of additional bus routes. The expert highlighted that the Metro Bridge, which is a key element of the capital's transport infrastructure, is considered emergency. Scientific institutes have confirmed its condition, raising concerns about the safety of transportation.

Calls to Action

Shevchenko also commented on the infrastructure situation, noting that while the authorities are repairing roads that could last for years, the key artery of the city risks being closed. He called for three strategic steps:

  • ensuring energy independence for the subway,
  • priority repair of the Metro Bridge,
  • creating an agglomeration that can improve the transport situation in the capital.

The proposed solution by the Kyiv authorities to launch additional bus routes in case of blackouts raises significant questions, as the safety of passengers and the condition of key transport arteries remain under threat. Experts, including Vasyl Shevchenko, point to the need for urgent measures to improve infrastructure, which could be crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency in public transportation in the capital. A strategic approach to the repair and modernization of key elements of the transport system could be decisive in preventing further problems in the future.
