Security Situation in Kyiv
On the night of July 7, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv landed in 166th place out of 173 cities on the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) global ranking of the most dangerous urban centers. Just two years earlier, in 2021, it held the 117th position on the same list—a sharp decline that underscores the city's deteriorating safety conditions amid ongoing hostilities.

In parallel, the Ukrainian firm Dark River has unveiled a new interceptor drone called the APUS-1. Already deployed across ten units within Ukraine's Defense Forces, this unmanned aircraft reaches speeds of up to 320 km/h, has an operational radius of 50 kilometers, and can stay aloft for as long as 50 minutes. Launching from a catapult takes under five minutes, and the drone requires a two-person crew. A standout feature is its ability to navigate autonomously without relying on GPS, making it especially valuable in contested combat zones.
Meanwhile, talks between Poland and Ukraine over the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets have resumed. Polish official Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Kyiv has expressed interest in the aircraft and proposed a mutually beneficial cooperation model to Warsaw. He stressed that Poland will only agree to a deal that serves both sides' interests.
As part of this collaboration, Ukraine has signaled its readiness to share advanced unmanned technologies with Poland within the next two years. Additionally, Germany has allocated 11.6 billion euros in its budget for Ukraine—a financial commitment that could significantly boost the country's defense capabilities.
The drop in Kyiv's safety ranking, as recorded by the Economist Intelligence Unit, highlights the immense challenges Ukraine faces during the protracted conflict. At the same time, homegrown innovations like the APUS-1 drone and renewed defense ties with Poland demonstrate Ukraine's determination to strengthen its military posture. Germany's substantial investment further underscores the global dimension of support for Ukraine as it strives for security and stability in the region.
